Fashion Savvy

Hi!

So, it’s story time. About a year ago, I got a job at a major retail store. I’m not going to say where because I kept the job for about a month and quit over the phone. Yeah, I wasn’t too committed. There were a lot of other factors contributing to my quitting, trust me, and I’ve learned from that experience. I promise I’m not just lazy! Anyway, the way I got the job was because I walked into the store, mostly to shop, and asked if they were hiring. (I had just left an interview elsewhere that had gone horribly.) When the manager said they were hiring, she interviewed me on the spot. I felt so unprepared! She started asking me questions about their store, company, and retail in general. Without pausing I answered the questions. I remember a specific question she asked, “What trends are coming up for spring/summer?” And guess what? I knew the answer! She was so impressed that I was hired on the spot. Although this job didn’t last for me, it was a great experience that helped my confidence.

Being in tune with the fashion industry and what is going on in the fashion world can open up a lot of opportunities, especially if you want to work in that industry!

Here are some tips on what you can do to keep up with the ever changing fashion world.

1. Read magazines

magazines

Magazines are amazing because they not only tell you new trends, but they are also a great way to find out personal style. They are so visual! They also usually have articles about people working in the fashion world which can be inspiring.

2. Check out blogs!

Fashion bloggers usually post photos only of themselves, but let me tell you- they are ahead of the trends! Everything you see them wearing will make its way to the runways, or their style is straight off the runway. Here are some great bloggers. You’re welcome in advance!

These bloggers are my favorite!! A lot of them have Instagram and Youtube channels too so check them out on their websites!

3. Real life inspiration

clothes-racks-brisbane

Check out stores! Retail shops are the most relatable way of seeing what is on the runways and what is up and coming. The clothes in the stores are toned down versions of what is doing well in high fashion. Seeing styles in stores will keep you up to date on what is currently trending.

I hope my fashion success story has helped you discover what you can be doing to improve your fashion savviness.

In Training

Trainers, sneakers, tennis shoes, what ever you call them – they are making an entrance into the fashion world. This trend of wearing athletic footwear with non-athletic clothing is so much fun because it creates an effortless vibe to any outfit. If you’re wearing a dress but don’t want to seem too dressy, you can throw on a pair of stylish sneakers and you will look chic. (And be comfortable)

The best part about this trend is that there are so many different colors and patterns with this type of shoe! A bold shoe doesn’t just have to be a heel. Everyone can pull off this look, and it can travel through seasons.

This is a perfect example (with bloggers) of wearing bright tennis shoes with fashionable outfits. It is also easy to see that it can work with any kind of style.

This is exactly why I love this trend. She is wearing a tutu and trainers and looks amazing! I love that this style is not following typical fashion ‘rules’ and it totally works.

My personal favorite way to wear this look is with these floral Adidas. Adidas and the Farm Company teamed up to create these amazing, girly, summer styled floral originals, and I absolutely adore these.

Do you like wearing sneakers with fashion?

A New Beginning…

Wow, I haven’t been on my blog in a long time. I don’t exactly know why I abandoned it… Maybe I got busy, perhaps I just lost interest. I feel like I’ve grown up a lot since I stopped writing on here, and my interests have especially changed. Instead of picking up where I left off, recapping my year, and having the same content, I am going to switch it up. I have started a YouTube channel all about fashion, life, and other fun things! My blog is going to have a lot to do with my channel now, so please go ahead and check it out- and subscribe!

Wildfox Couture

I just found Wildfox by some miracle on the internet, and now I’m obsessed. I don’t actually know why I’m into it so much, because it’s not typically what I gravitate to, but I just love everything about this brand. The clothes are very pastel/edgy. I especially love the ads, they are like modern Marie Antoinette. On my very specific Christmas list, I included “Anything Wildfox,” because I don’t think I can afford it on my own. (Insert sad face here) (Insert your pity for my broketeenageawfulfashionbloggingskillz) Anyway, I love love love Wildfox Couture.

Their new lingerie label is awesome too!

My favorites are the swim and the sweaters. Just look through these clothes. I wish I owned something from Wildfox! Pictures found on Weheartit.

Dsquared² Fall 2012

The new Fall collection for Dsquared² is everything I love. It is very retro and colorful, which is different for a fall collection. I like that designers are really stepping up and doing what they like to do, instead of what’s trending. Here are my favorite looks from the runway.

The colors are very rich and modern, but they style of the clothes are 60’s. There are a lot of fuzzy sweaters, which I love, and capes. Capes are a very big deal this season and I think they worked it in perfectly with this collection. My favorite accessory were the sunglasses. They completed a lot of the looks. I just want to be this glamorous every day.

Burberry Fall 2012 Ready to Wear

I’ve been obsessively checking style.com, shopping online, (more like looking online) and reading magazines. Fall fashion is slowly creeping in, and devouring my helpless self. Of course for most people, it’s still all about summer, but I personally think it’s dull. Bring on the coats and boots! I love fall fashion. I especially love the new Burberry Prorsum fall collection. It is so classic, with the beautiful coats and patterns, yet there was something very new and fresh about the whole thing.

The bows on the waist of the coats were adorable. A very youthful, yet tasteful touch.

There was something in this collection that was my favorite, though. The shirts and sweaters with cute animals(mostly owls) on them did it for me.

What’s not to love?

Also, the men’s clothes were just superb. They were a little out there in some aspects, but pay attention guys, because this is the way to dress for cold weather. No question about it.

Resort Wear?

The new Resort 2013 collections! What an exciting time. The new shows feature a lot of floral, structure, and color. Which I love, (of course.)

At Thakoon, it was all stripes. I loved the new patterns he came out with. He definitely had a very literal take on the “resort” aesthetic, because it seemed like beach wear:

At NAHM, it was a smaller collection, but I loved it nonetheless. It was bright and fun, which I liked because most of the designers were very mature. How am I supposed to relate to that? They had bright pink in the collection that I loved. These are my favorite looks:

My absolute favorite was probably at Marc by Marc Jacobs. It was fun, the models had multi-color hair, it was youthful, and all around adorable. And of course, Marc by Marc Jacobs is more affordable than the normal brand, but I still don’t own anything from Marc Jacobs. (Wish I did, one of my favorite designers.) Here are my personal favorites from the collection:

Meadham Kirchhoff

Recently I’ve been researching the new Fall Runway Shows. And one of my favorites is Meadham Kirchhoff. (If you click on that link, you can watch the show) The ready-to-wear collection is so fun and girly, with a 70’s-80’s vibe. It is everything I want, but it’s way too expensive for my little wallet. Check out some of the pictures from the show:

The shoes were all glittery, in this odd shape, but I thought it went perfectly with the styling.

The bags were all very funky and bat accessories were involved in a lot of the looks.

The alien makeup was amazing and totally completed the collection. Even though it was a little out there.

The whole show was overall fun and cute, complete with models throwing glitter all over the runway. That is one show I would love to go to. And the clothes I wish I could have. What do you think of the new collection? I personally love it.

Tutus

I am a dancer, and I love wearing tutus. But I also think they are really cute in fashion, outside of ballet class. I love the whole petticoat look too, which is kind of in the same category as tutus. Tutus look so cute and girly, which I love, (of course) but they also can be really edgy and cool looking.

This is a petticoat skirt from American Apparel, that I want to get so bad, but it’s way too expensive for just some ruffles.

And here is tutu to the extreme at Betsey Johnson:

How do you feel about tutus? I would wear them all the time if I could!
